2 Plug-in Hybrid SUVs Coming to India in 2026

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles accounts for a very small fraction (nearly 2-2.5%) of the Indian automobile market, and is largely limited to luxury models. However, these vehicles are quite sensible for India due to their strong practical advantages and role as a transition technology. PHEVs can be utilized as EVs for urban driving, while reducing fuel consumptions and emission levels. They also bridge the gap between ICE and fully electric vehicles, especially in a market with limited charging infrastructure.

Despite slow adoption, OEMs such as JSW MG Motor India and JSW Motors in partnership with Chery are planning to introduce plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2026. JSW plans to launch the MG Starlight 560 and Jetour T2 under its two independent joint ventures in the second half of 2026, around the Diwali season. Here’s a brief overview of these upcoming plug-in hybrid SUVs.

MG Starlight 560

MG Plug-in Hybrid SUV launch

MG Starlight 560 will be based on the China-spec Wuling Startlight 560, which is offered with a 1.5L petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a 205kwh battery pack. This setup returns a combined power of 197bhp and 230Nm of torque. It offers a full electric range of 100km on a single charge, and with a full 52-litre fuel tank it extends up to 1,100km.

Slated to launch by October 2026, the MG Starlight 560 will take on the Mahindra XUV 7XO and Mahindra XEV 9S.

Jetour T2

Based on Chery’s Kunpeng Super Hybrid C-DM architecture, the Jetour T2 uses a 1.5L turbo petrol engine that’s good enough for 154-156bhp and 220Nm. This motor comes paired with two electric motors, a 26.7kWh LFP battery pack and a hybrid transmission. A larger 43.24kWh battery option is also available in select global markets. In hybrid mode, the T2 offers a range of over 1,000km. The SUV does 0 to 100kmph in just 7.2 seconds.

While its pricing and positioning are yet to be confirmed, the Jetour T2 is expected to rival SUVs like Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV 7XO, MG Hector Plus and Jeep Meridian.
