3 Skoda Cars Getting New 8-Speed Automatic Gearbox – Details

In an interesting trend, 8-speed automatic transmissions are gradually gaining popularity among Indian buyers. Over the last 2-3 years, OEMs such as Hyundai, Kia, Skoda, Volkswagen and Toyota are switching from 6-speed to 8-speed automatic gearboxes. There are multiple reasons behind their popularity including better fuel efficiency, lower carbon emissions, smoother acceleration, and improved performance. Since it lowers CO2 emissions, this transmission also helps the carmaker meeting the upcoming CAFÉ III standards.

Skoda’s 8-speed AT Gearbox Explained

Skoda 8-speed automatic gearbox

Skoda’s new 8-speed automatic transmission, called AQ300, replaces the older Aisin-sourced 6-speed gearbox. It has been designed for small turbocharged engines and Indian traffic conditions. The new transmission consists of major components such as torque convertor, lock-up clutch, planetary gear sets, hydraulic control system, transmission control module (TCM) and multi-plate clutches and brakes.

The torque convertor design perfectly works in the Indian heavy traffic and stop-go driving situations. Furthermore, Skoda’s 8-speed automatic gearbox is more reliable and has lesser clutch wear issues. The updated 2026 Skoda Kushaq will be the first model to receive this new transmission, followed by the facelifted Slavia sedan and Kylaq subcompact SUV.

Kushaq, Kylaq & Slavia To Get New AT Gearbox

The new Skoda Kushaq’s 1.0L TSI petrol engine will be exclusive offered with the new 8-speed AT gearbox, while the 1.5L TSO engine will continue to come with a 7-speed DSG transmission. The updated Skoda Slavia is also ready to hit roads in the coming months. Similar to the Kushaq, the sedan will receive the 8-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox with the 1.0L TSI engine.

Skoda Kylaq will be the brand’s most affordable SUV to offer an 8-speed automatic transmission. With the new gearbox, the subcompact SUV is expected to become more fuel efficient. Skoda is also considering Kylaq CNG; however, it could be available as a retrofit option. The CNG version is expected to be available only with a manual gearbox.
