The Indian automotive industry has been witnessing a gradual shift towards alternative fuels, including CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles. In August 2026, alternative fuels surpassed petrol-powered cars for the first time, accounting for 41.9% of passenger vehicle retail sales. Among these, CNG vehicles emerged as the largest sales contributor, with a 25.2% share, followed by hybrid cars at 9% and EVs at 7.6%.
Considering the growing demand for CNG vehicles, carmakers such as Kia, Hyundai and Tata are gearing up to launch CNG MPVs and SUVs in the coming months. Here’s a brief preview of the upcoming CNG SUVs and MPVs.
Kia Carens & Carens Clavis CNG
Bookings for the Kia Carens and Carens Clavis CNG are already underway ahead of their launch in the coming weeks. The CNG versions of the MPVs will feature a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a factory-fitted CNG kit, delivering a maximum power of 93bhp and 123Nm of torque. Compared to the standard petrol versions, the Carens and Carens Clavis CNG will be 22bhp less powerful. The MPVs are expected to deliver a fuel efficiency of around 22km/kg – 25km/kg.
Hyundai Bayon CNG
The all-new Hyundai Bayon-based midsize SUV is set to make its official debut in October or November, 2026. According to reports, the SUV is expected to be offered with the Creta’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a factory-fitted CNG kit. The CNG-powered version is likely to feature an underbody-mounted tank, while retaining a spare wheel. It will become the first Hyundai model over 4 metres in length to offer CNG powertrain.
Tata Curvv CNG
Tata Motors is planning to expand its CNG product lineup with the Curvv CNG by the end of this year. Similar to the Punch CNG, it will feature Tata’s twin-cylinder technology, which will free up boot space. The Tata Curvv CNG is expected to feature a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a CNG kit. Its combined power and torque outputs are yet to be revealed.
