99% Sales Growth In One Year


With total sales of 4,41,576 units in August 2026 compared with 3,27,719 units in the same month last year, the Indian automobile industry witnessed a strong 34.7% YoY (year-on-year) growth. However, overall monthly sales declined by 4.7%. Maruti Suzuki retained the top spot with sales of over 1.76 units, followed by Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai and Kia.

In the highly competitive SUV segment, Tata Motors took the lead with Punch micro-SUV, followed by the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Creta and Mahindra Scoprio. A total of 21,320 units of the Tata Punch were sold in August 2026, compared with 10,704 units in the corresponding month last year. The sub-4 metre SUV recorded a strong 99% YoY growth.

The second spot was taken by another micro-SUV from Maruti Suzuki – the Fronx. The Indo-Japanese automaker sold 18,730 units of the Fronx in August 2026, compared to 12,422 units in August 2025, registering a 51% YoY growth. However, the Fronx’s MoM (month-on-month) sales declined from 19,473 units in July 2026.

The Tata Nexon secured the third position with total sales of 18,431 units as opposed to 14,004 units in the same month previous year, reflecting 32% YoY growth.

The Hyundai Creta registered sales of 16,288 units in August 2026, compared to 15,924 units in the same month last year, posting a marginal 2% YoY growth. The SUV’s sales also declined on a monthly basis from 18,088 units in July 2026.

Mahindra’s Scorpio, which includes the Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic, became the fifth best-selling SUV in August 2026, recording total sales of 15,576 units. The SUV clocked an impressive 58% YoY growth.  However, it sales witnessed a marginal MoM decline from 16,009 units in July 2026.
