Xiaomi’s global Redmi Note 17 family is here and we’re looking at the two non-Pro models now (head this way for the Pros).

The Redmi Note 17 and Redmi Note 17 5G are nearly identical phones, save for some obvious differences – the choice of chipset and the ability to connect to 5G.

The Redmi Note 17 uses the 6nm Snapdragon 6s Gen 2 with either 4GB, 6GB, or 8GB of RAM. Its CPU clocks up to 2.9GHz, and its modem supports up to 4G. The Redmi Note 17 5G uses a newer, 4nm Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 with a 2.3GHz CPU, either 6GB or 8GB of packaged RAM, and, of course, 5G. It’s not exactly clear which SoC is more powerful just on specs.

Both phones focus on big batteries and big displays. Each gets a near-7-inch 120Hz 1080p AMOLED, clad in Gorilla Glass 7i and with a built-in fingerprint reader underneath. On the inside, each packs a 7,700mAh Silicon-carbon (Si-C) battery that supports 45W charging and 22.5W reverse wired charging. The Redmi Note 17’s predecessors had 6.77-inch screens and either 6,000mAh or 5,520mAh power packs.

The added screen estate and battery result in a substantial jump in size – the Redmi Note 17 and 17 5G outweigh their predecessors significantly – the 4G model is 40 grams heavier, tipping the scales at Ultra-worthy 224 grams. The 5G model is almost 50 grams heavier at a total of 225 grams.

The rest of the Redmi Note 17 and 17 5G specs are the same. The phones have a single rear 50MP f/1.8 camera and a 16MP selfie shooter on the front. Both phones are IP65-rated, and both run Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3 with a promised 6 years of security support.

The Redmi Note 17 ships in Celestial Purple, Sky Teal, and Black, and in five configurations: 4/128GB, 4/256GB, 6/128GB, 6/256GB, and 8/256GB, starting from $250. The Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G gets the same colors and only three configurations: 6/128GB, 6/256GB, and 8/256GB, starting from $300. Both phones support microSD storage expansion.
