August 2026 ended on a positive note for the Indian automotive industry, with most OEMs registering healthy sales growth. Hyundai and Kia recorded their highest-ever domestic monthly sales, while Tata Motors significantly widened its sales gap over Mahindra & Mahindra. Key Insights:

– Maruti Suzuki retained the top spot, recording total sales of 2,19,220 units compared to 1,31,278 units in the same month last year. This translates into a 34.8% YoY (year-on-year) growth. However, compared to 1,96,203 units sales of July, the carmaker witnessed a 9.80% MoM (month-on-month) decline.

– In August 2026, Maruti Suzuki sold 79,045 units in the utility vehicle (UV) segment, 77,166 units in midsize segment and 8,799 units in mini segment along with total of 11,961 units of Eeco. During the first five months of FY2027, the Indo-Japanese automaker crossed the one million of total sales milestone.

– Tata Motors strengthen its market position, recording domestic sales of 65,253 units, reflecting a 59% YoY growth. The carmaker sold 16,549 units of electric vehicles (EVs), including domestic and export markets, nearly doubling its sales from 8,540 units in August 2025.

– The sales gap between Tata and Mahindra significantly widen with nearly 6,000 units in August 2026. Mahindra & Mahindra sold 59,257 units last month compared to 39,399 units in the same month last year. The homegrown automaker exported 1,07,648 units, translating a 42 percent YoY growth.

– Hyundai Motor India registered its highest-ever domestic monthly sales of 54,396 units, reflecting 23.6% YoY growth. Meanwhile, Kia India also recorded its best-ever monthly performance, dispatching 29,042 units against 19.608 units in August 2025. The carmaker recorded a massive 48.1% YoY growth.
