Hyundai Motor India is gearing up to launch two new SUVs in the next six months – the Bayon and the HE1i (codenamed). The Hyundai Bayon will be introduced as an affordable alternative to the Creta, and will directly challenge the Maruti Suzuki Victoris.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai HE1i will be a compact electric SUV that will take on the Tata Punch EV, Nexon EV, Kia Syros EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO. It will be the brand’s most affordable electric offering, and is expected to be based on the global-spec Hyundai Inster EV.

Here’s a brief overview of these upcoming Hyundai SUVs.

Hyundai Bayon

The upcoming Hyundai Bayon is expected to be offered with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a CNG powertrain. The petrol engine could be available with either a 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox, while the CNG might be offered only with a manual transmission. There will be no diesel engine option.

Spy images suggest that the SUV will feature an upright stance along with the split headlamp setup, DRLs with H-shaped signature, pronounced wheel arches, pull-type door handles, dual-tone alloy wheels, LED taillamps and a roof-mounted spoiler.

The interior could be inspired by the Brazil-spec next-gen i20 hatchback. The Bayon will feature a curved dual screen setup and a three-spoke steering wheel with a four-dot motif signifying ‘H’ in Morse code. On the feature front, the SUV is likely to offer a wireless phone charger, ventilated front seats, a sunroof, a 360-degree camera, Level 2 ADAS and more.

Hyundai HE1i

Based on the Hyundai’s E-GMP (K) architecture, the new compact SUV will be available in Standard Range and Long Range versions. While the battery details are yet to be revealed, the HE1i is likely to feature 42kWh and 49kWh battery packs borrowed from the Inster EV. The latter offers claimed ranges of up to 327km and 370km, respectively.

Hyundai originally planned to use Exide batteries for the upcoming compact EV. However, due to production delays, the carmaker is now expected to use Svolt cells. The Hyundai E1i will also mark the debut of the brand’s next-generation infotainment system.
