Toyota Fortuner Diesel Safe After CAFE 3 Norms, Innova Crysta in Trouble

Diesel vehicles aren’t going anywhere even after 2027, especially in the case of Toyota Kirloskar Motor. The highly popular Toyota Fortuner SUV and Hilux lifestyle pickup will continue to be available with diesel engines beyond 2027. However, the Toyota Innova Crysta diesel will be discontinued next year with the implementation of the CAFÉ (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) 3 norms.

Official Words

Speaking to an online media publication, Sabari Manohar, Executive Vice President, Sales and Service at TKM, has revealed that demand for larger diesel SUVs such as Fortuner remains consistently high. “There are hardcore fans for diesel”. “Diesel is diesel.” “There are segments like Cyrsta, where it’s a purely diesel segment.” “It depends on segment.”

“At this point in time, we have good demand for hybrids, good demand for ICE, and we hope to create a good demand for EV as well.” “We need to see how the whole policy direction changes,” he added.

Toyota’s 2.8L Diesel Engine Will Stay

The Toyota Fortuner and Hilux will continue to retain the 2.8L diesel engine, while the Innova Crysta will drop the 2.4L diesel engine from the lineup. The Fortuner’s four-cylinder, inline DOHC diesel engine delivers a maximum power of 204PS and a peak torque of 420Nm with manual and 500Nm with automatic gearbox.

The SUV lineup is also available with a 2.8L turbo diesel engine paired with 48V mild hybrid system, consisting of ISG (belt-integrated starter generator, 48V lithium-ion battery and regenerative braking system.

CAFÉ 3 Norms – A Brief

CAFÉ 3 norms will introduce significantly stricter fuel efficiency rules, with an average CO2 target of around 91-93g/km. This means, OEMs will need to make higher investment in upgrading technologies such as advanced valve systems, idle-stop, hybrid systems, lightweight materials and more. The upgrades are expected to increase prices of the small cars, while strong hybrids and EVs will witness faster adoption. The CAFÉ  3 regulations are scheduled to come into effect from April 2027.
