Hyundai Motor India has planned a new compact electric vehicle (EV) for the Indian market. At the brand’s Investor Day 2025, the company confirmed that the new EV will be a compact SUV “designed, engineered and built in India for Indian customers.” Slated to arrive in 2027, the new Hyundai compact EV is expected to be based on the globally available Inster, underpinning E-GMP (K) architecture.

Codenamed HE1i, the new EV will be manufactured at Hyundai’s Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu, and will use batteries sourced from Exide. When launched, it will be positioned against the Tata Punch EV.

2 Battery Pack Options
Hyundai Motor India has remained tight-lipped about detailed specifications; however, confirmed that the new Hyundai compact EV will be offered with two battery pack options – Standard Range and Long Range.
In Europe, the Hyundai Inster EV is available with 42kWh (Standard Range) and 49kWh (Long-Range) battery options, delivering claimed driving range of 300km and 355km on WLTP cycle, respectively. The Standard Range version is paired to a 97bhp, 147Nm electric motor, while the Long Range variant features a more powerful 115bhp with the same 147Nm torque output.
How Big Could It Be?
The Hyundai Inster EV measures 3825mm in length, 1610mm in width and 1575mm in height with a wheelbase of 2580mm. The upcoming compact electric SUV is expected to as big as its donor sibling. Its arch rival, the Tata Punch EV measures 3857mm in length.
Expected Features
Similar to the global-spec Hyundai Inster, the upcoming Hyundai compact SUV is expected to be packed with multiple advanced features including an infotainment system with OTA (over-the-air) updates, Level 2 ADAS (autonomous driver assistance system) suite and In-car connectivity tech.
Other highlights might include dual 10.25-inch displays (for the infotainment and instrumental functionalities), auto climate control, ventilated seats, a 360-degree camera with blind spot monitoring, multiple airbags and more. Hyundai’s Made-in-India EV might feature fully flat-folding seats, along with sliding and reclining rear seats, similar to the Inster EV.
