India’s ethanol-blended petrol (EBP) program has been gradually progressing over the past few years. The country has already achieved its 20% ethanol blending target (E20) in FY2025-26 and is now moving towards the original 30% ethanol blending by 2030 under the National Policy on biofuels. The latest development on this initiative was recently shared by the Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari.

Mr. Gadkari stated that India’s largest passenger vehicle (PV) manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki is set to introduce a flex fuel car on Environment Day, June 5, 2026. This upcoming Maruti flex fuel car will run on 100% on ethanol (E100). He also urged the country to reduce the usage of petrol, diesel and gas, highlighted that around 87% of these fuels are imported into India.
What It Could Be?
While the product details are still under the wraps, the upcoming model could be either the Maruti Fronx flex fuel or the Maruti WagonR flex fuel.
Maruti WagonR Flex Fuel

Maruti Suzuki had showcased the WagonR flex fuel prototype in 2022, which was claimed to designed and developed locally with support from Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan. The carmaker had mentioned that it could reduce tailpipe emissions by 79 percent compared to a regular petrol fuel vehicle.
The WagonR’s flex fuel version received several mechanical upgrades over the standard petrol version including an updated engine management system, fuel injector, fuel pump and other mechanical components. It also features advanced fuel system technologies such as ethanol sensors to detect ethanol percent and a heated fuel rail for improved cold start assist.
Maruti Fronx Flex Fuel

The Maruti Fronx flex fuel was showcased at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show alongside the Victoris CBG and CNG-powered versions. The model is likely to be equipped with an updated version of the existing 1.2L petrol engine, supporting up to 85 percent ethanol blending. It features ‘flex fuel’ decals on the exterior.
