India celebrated a proud milestone as Manipuri film ‘Boong’ became the first Indian movie to win at the BAFTA Awards 2026 in the Best Children’s and Family Film category. Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and backed by Farhan Akhtar, the film’s victory drew widespread praise across the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the achievement in a post on X, calling it a moment of national pride. He praised the artists and creators who brought the story to life. “Congratulations to all those associated with this film. This is indeed a moment of immense joy, especially for Manipur. It also highlights the immense creative talent in our nation,” PM Modi said.
Film fraternity celebrates the historic win
Several prominent voices from the industry also applauded the success. Kangana Ranaut congratulated Lakshmipriya Devi and recalled their early professional association. She wrote, “Congratulations @lp_devi and the entire team of Boong for this award, you spoke so well and look great.”
In another message, she added, “Dear LP, when we first worked together more than a decade ago, you were my first AD on a film called ‘Game,’ whispers on the sets were that LP is made for greatness. Your time is here my friend, you have no idea how much honour/respect you have brought to the entertainment industry, India and the north east. Wish you the best. Keep shining.”

Director Shekhar Kapur also praised the film’s cultural depth and impact, “Congratulations to Laxmipriya for winning the BAFTA for the best family film. I thought BOONG was better than the films that won the main awards. It’s just that it’s so rooted in Indian culture and politics that the westerners did not get it. That’s why it’s important to make our film awards more important internationally ..”
Lakshmipriya Devi’s emotional speech on stageWhile accepting the award at London’s Royal Festival Hall, Lakshmipriya Devi used the moment to speak about peace in Manipur. She said, “So, just want to use this opportunity to say that we pray for peace to return to Manipur. We pray that all the internally displaced children, including the child actors in the film, regain their joy, their innocence, and their dreams once again. So, thank you, BAFTA, for giving us not only an award, but this stage to express our hope. Thank you, and have a wonderful evening, everyone.” Her words added emotional weight to the victory.Story, cast and makers behind ‘Boong’Set in Manipur, the film tells a heartfelt story of family, loss and hope. It follows a young boy, Boong, who dreams of reuniting with his missing father. Raised by his single mother, he embarks on a journey with his best friend to find him.
