DM-i Technology Explained

This plug-in hybrid EV system consists of BYD’s renowned Blade battery, a highly-efficient petrol engine called Xiaoyn and an electric hybrid system that includes electric motors, controller, electronics and intelligent energy management.

In this setup, the battery pack powers the electric motor most of the time and the vehicle runs similarly to a pure EV. It significantly reduces fuel consumption, while offering a long driving range.

When the battery discharges, the petrol engine starts generating electricity, while the electric motor continues to drive the wheels. At higher speeds, the gasoline motor directly powers the wheels, with electric motor offering assistance when required. Globally, BYD uses its DM-i technology in models such as Seal, Song Plus, Qin Plus, Destroyer 05, Han, Tang and Seal 06.

BYD Atto 2 DM-i

In global markets, the BYD Atto 2 is available with a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine paired either with a 7.8kWh or 18kWh battery pack, delivering power worth 166bhp and 212bhp, respectively. The smaller battery pack version delivers a claimed WLTP combined range of 928km, while the larger battery variant offers up to 998km.

BYD Sealion 6 DM-i

BYD Sealion 6 PHEV is offered with 1.5-litre naturally aspirated and turbo petrol engine options, paired with either an 18.3kWh or a 26.6kWh battery pack. Its claimed combined driving range stands at 1,092km.

The 1.5L naturally aspired PHEV with a FWD layout delivers a combined output of 218bhp and offers a pure-electric range of up to 140km. The 1.5L turbo petrol PHEV with AWD system, on the other hand, delivers up to 344bhp and an electric-only range of up to 128km.
