A group of children playing near a creek in Homeland Park, South Carolina, made a shocking discovery on Sunday when they came across what they initially believed were deer bones.One of the boys said he had dug up what he thought was a rock, only to realise something was off when they noticed eye sockets in the object. Curious, the children picked it up and showed it to their parents, who were immediately alarmed.The children’s mother promptly contacted local authorities. Officials from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office and coroner’s office arrived at the scene and confirmed that the skull was human.Further examination and digging in the area led to the recovery of nearly 45–50 additional bones.According to the coroner, the remains appear to be quite old. Initial estimates suggest they may have been there for over 10 years, based on root growth around the bones and their weathered condition.“This is not something recent,” the coroner noted, adding that the estimate is still tentative.Investigators believe the remains may have been carried downstream at some point, as some bones could have been scattered along the creek.The skull itself was found intact, with no visible fractures, leaving officials uncertain about the cause of death.An anthropologist from Clemson University is set to assist authorities in analysing the remains and helping determine key details such as age, identity, and possible cause of death.Early assessments suggest the remains could belong to an individual aged between 15 and 25.As of now, officials say it is too early to determine whether foul play was involved. The investigation is ongoing, with teams continuing to search the surrounding areas for more evidence.
