COIMBATORE: A local cable channel owner was arrested on Monday, for illegally telecasting the unreleased movie ‘Jananayagan’ in his channel on Saturday. The movie is still awaiting mandatory certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).The arrested man has been identified as S Palanisamy, 44, of Ram Nagar near Karumathampatti. He owns a cable channel named ‘Rasi Prime Movie.’The channel’s administrative office in Karumathampatti police limits has since been sealed and its broadcasting equipment seized. Officers also raided the channel’s office and seized a computer, five hard disks, and other electronic peripherals used in the illegal transmission.Earlier, Mohanapriya, deputy secretary, Coimbatore suburban east district unit of TVK filed a complaint with the Karumathampatti police station on Sunday night. Coimbatore district superintendent of police Dr K Karthikeyan had then formed two special teams to spearhead a rapid investigation.Investigation revealed that the film was streamed for public viewing on the local cable network via an unauthorised internet link. Acting on the findings, a team led by Karumathampatti police inspector Vadivel Kumar apprehended Palanisamy on Monday evening. He was subsequently produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.A senior police officer said the channel has also been telecasting new movies that are released in OTT. “We have sent a recommendation to cancel the license of the channel,” the officer said.Meanwhile, the Coimbatore district police have issued a stern advisory to local cable operators and the public, warning that illegal sharing of copyrighted content or uncertified films via the internet or cable networks will attract severe legal consequences.
