2026 has begun with a bang for the Indian automobile industry. Wholesales dispatches of nearly 4.50 lakh units were recorded last month, making it the highest ever January sales figures. Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the market with total domestic sales of 178,300 units along with its highest ever exports of 51,020 units.
Interestingly, Tata Motors overtook both Mahindra & Mahindra and Hyundai Motor India by a significant margin. Other OEMs including Toyota, Kia and MG have also performed well in January, 2026.

With 23,365 units sold, the Tata Nexon (ICE + EV) emerged as India’s top-selling car, up from 15,397 units of the same month previous year. The Maruti Dzire secured the second position with 19,629 units, while the recently facelifted Tata Punch claimed the third spot with 19,257 units.
The Hyundai Creta slipped to the fourth place, registering 17,921 units compared to 18,522 units in January, 2025. Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga MPV, Swift hatchback, Brezza subcompact SUV and Baleno hatchback grabbed the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth positions, respectively. The carmaker managed to sell 17,892 Ertigas, 17,806 Swifts, 17,486 Brezzas and 16,782 Balenos last month.
Mahindra featured in the top-1- list with the Scorpio (Scorpio N + Scorpio Classic), recording sales of 15,542 units, marginally higher than 15,442 units recorded in the corresponding month last year. Meanwhile, the newly-launched Maruti Victoris SUV secured to the tenth place with sales of 15,240 units.
