Kia’s Most Affordable Hybrid SUV In the Works For India

The second-generation Kia Sonet is on its way to India. Codenamed QY2E, the all-new model is currently undergoing testing and expected to arrive in 2027. The new Kia Sonet 2027 is likely to witness comprehensive changes inside and out along with several mechanical upgrades.

The SUV’s recently spied test mule was heavily camouflaged, concealing most of the design details. However, we still got to see a few key elements including the front grille, raked windshield and alloy wheels.

2024 Kia Sonet Launch Date

New Platform & More Cabin Space

The biggest upgrade will be the introduction of Kia’s new K1 platform, which supports the latest electrical and electronic (E&E) architecture. This platform enables features such as OTA (over-the-air) updates and remote diagnostics.

The K1 platform, which also underpins the Kia Syros, has 20mm longer wheelbase than the Sonet’s existing K2 architecture. This will allow Kia to address the limited rear seat space of the current model. As a result, the new Kia Sonet is expected to offer improved cabin space and comfort for the rear seat occupants.

Several New Features

While official details are yet to be revealed, the 2027 Kia Sonet is expected to offer a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with a new fully digital driver’s display. Aiming to enhance its value proposition, the carmaker might introduce the Level 2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance system). Other key updates might include a new cabin theme, new trims and upholstery and improved material quality throughout the interior.

Engine & Gearbox Options

The new Kia Sonet 2027 is expected to retain the existing 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol (83PS/115Nm), 1.0L turbo petrol (120PS/172Nm) and 1.5L diesel (120PS/172Nm) engine options. Transmission choices might also remain unchanged, including a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed iMT, a 6-speed automatic and a 7-speed DCT.

Kia Sonet Hybrid

Kia is gearing up to enter the hybrid vehicle segment with the launch of the Sorento 7-seater SUV and new Seltos in 2027. The carmaker is likely to electrify its proven 1.5L petrol engine for its upcoming hybrid offerings. The next-generation Kia Sonet might also debut with the same hybrid powertrain, possibly in 2028 or 2029. If that happens, the Sonet will become Kia’s most affordable hybrid car in India.
