Mahindra’s Nexon Rival To Get CNG – Will It Beat Brezza in Mileage?

Mahindra & Mahindra is set to expand the XUV 3XO lineup with a new CNG variant by the end of this year or early next year. Following the petrol and electric versions, this will become the third powertrain option for the SUV’s lineup. The Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG is expected to be offered with the 1.2L, 3-cylinder MPFI turbo petrol engine. However, its power and torque figures are still under the wraps.

Conventional CNG Tank Or New Setup?

There is currently no clarity on whether the Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG will feature a conventional single-cylinder CNG tank setup in the boot or adopt a dual-cylinder layout similar to the Tata Nexon or even an underbody tank configuration like the Victoris, respectively.

For reference, the Mahindra XUV 3XO offers a cargo space of 295-litre, while rivals such as the Tata Nexon and Hyundai Venue, provide 328-litre each, the Kia Sonet offers 392-litres and the Maruti Brezza comes with 328-litres of boot space. A conventional CNG setup is likely to further reduce the XUV 3XO’s already limited boot space.

High On Mileage

The Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG is expected to be significantly more fuel efficient than its petrol counterpart, which delivers 20.1kmpl with manual and 18.2kmpl with automatic gearbox.

For comparison, the Tata Nexon CNG and Maruti Brezza CNG offer a claimed mileage of 24km/kg and 25.5km/kg, respectively. The Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet; however, do not currently offer factory-fitted CNG options.

CNG Sales In India

In FY2025, the CNG vehicles accounted for 19.5 percent market share, with Maruti Suzuki leading the segment with a 70.5% share. Models such as Maruti WagonR, Maruti Dzire, Tata Punch and Maruti Brezza emerged as the top-sellers.

With demands for CNG vehicles steadily increasing, OEMs such as Mahindra & Mahindra, Skoda, Renault, Honda and Toyota are actively expanding their CNG product portfolios. Most carmakers are now adopting a multi-powertrain strategy across segments to strengthen their market presence.
