The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly planning to consider franchise legend Mats Sudin. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Maple Leafs are reportedly in discussions about a potential role within the organization. Sundin is a Swedish former professional ice hockey center widely regarded as one of the greatest Toronto Maple Leafs players in history. As per reports, he was the first European to be drafted first overall in the NHL (1989) and played 18 seasons, mainly for the Quebec Nordiques and Toronto. This move comes in response to MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley announcing that the Maple Leafs are entering a new phase focused on long-term success and cultural change. Previously, the club had general manager Brad Treliving in a major organizational shake-up.

Toronto Maple Leafs to consider franchise legend Mats Sundin for potential management role

The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly planning to collaborate with franchise legend Mats Sundin on a potential role within the organization. The veteran NHL icon Mats Sundin is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in franchise history. He has spent over a decade with Toronto and remains the team’s all-time leader. Sudin was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012 and has maintained ties with the organization even after retiring.NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman stated that, “It’s unclear when the process began, but the ex-captain is in Toronto and has met with MLSE president Keith Pelley at least once. An advisory role — or something along those lines — is being discussed.”Friedman discussed this on his 32 Thoughts podcast that a VP of Hockey Operations role wouldn’t be out of the question for Sundin. Meanwhile, confirming the news, Chris Johnston also wrote on his X/Twitter account, “Mats Sundin is in Toronto to meet with the # Leafs about a potential role in the new management structure, per sources.”Earlier, the Hockey Hall of Famer attended the Leafs’ training camp in 2024, where he spent nearly a week engaging in activities that went far beyond typical alumni appearances. Reports are suggesting that bringing Sudin into a leadership role could change the growth trajectory of the Maple Leafs. His deep understanding of the franchise and its culture may prove valuable as Toronto is currently looking forward to rebuilding the team both on and off the ice. With the Maple Leafs entering a critical offseason with a new general manager and potential management changes, the team’s future will be determined by the decisions made in the coming months.
