Meta’s smart glasses feature a capture LED on the side of the frame that blinks whenever the camera is recording, helping alert people nearby. However, some users have raised concerns that the small indicator is easy to miss.
In response, Meta has introduced new privacy-focused safeguards for its latest smart glasses that prevent recording if the capture LED has been tampered with.
The feature is currently available on Meta’s second-generation smart glasses and newer models, and will roll out to all of the company’s smart glasses.
The feature can automatically detect if the capture LED has been covered or damaged. If tampering is detected, the camera will be disabled and will only function again once the LED is restored to working order, according to the company.
Meta also said it will remove ads, social media posts, and online listings promoting services that disable or tamper with the capture LED.
