MG Plug-in Hybrid SUV For India


JSW MG Motor India is all set to foray into the plug-in hybrid segment, which is currently dominated luxury OEMs such as BMW, Lexus, Porsche and others. While official details of the upcoming product are still under the wraps, it’s reported to be positioned against the Mahindra XUV 7XO. Interestingly, the model will also be offered with an electric powertrain to challenge the Mahindra XEV 9S.

Codenamed 520, the new MG SUV could be based on the Wuling Starlight 560, and is slated to arrive by October, 2026. Let’s take a look what the China-spec Starline 560 SUV has to offer and what we can expect from the upcoming MG Plug-in Hybrid SUV.

Dimensions & Design

In terms of dimensions, the Wuling Starlight 560 measures 4,745mm in length, 1,850mm in width and 1,755mm – 1,770mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,810mm. The new MG SUV is likely to have similar dimensions as its donor sibling, making it as large as the Mahindra XUV 7XO. Globally, the Starline 560 is available in both 5 and 7-seats configurations, and offers a boot space of 320-litres, which is expandable up to 1,945-litres with seats folded.

Powertrain Details

Globally, the Wuling Starlight 560 is available with 1.5L turbo petrol, 1.5 NA petrol plug-in hybrid and BEV powertrain options. The upcoming MG plug-in-hybrid SUV is likely to share powertrain with its donor sibling, featuring a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a 194bhp electric motor, a 9.5-20.5kWh LFP battery. This setup offers a pure EV range of 125km (CLTC) and a combined range of 1,110km. Fuel consumption is rated at 5.3-litre per 100km. The Starlight 560 SUV is one of the most affordable long-range PHEV SUVs available globally.
