Per ComingSoon.net, some industry insiders have already been talking about Tom Cruise being “eyed” for the villain role in Joseph Kosinski’s new Miami Vice film. The gossip picked up steam when The Ringer’s podcast, ‘The Big Picture’, brought it up. Daniel Richtman, a known insider, kicked things off by saying Cruise was in talks for the part. But the hosts on ‘The Big Picture’ weren’t buying it. Sean Fennessey said his own source already “debunked” the rumor, and then he and Bill Simmons moved on, not giving it much weight.Despite that, the idea of Cruise playing a villain, especially after working with Kosinski on ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, doesn’t seem too unreal. Cruise and Kosinski have already collaborated before. Cruise has played the grey-shaded guy before as well. In ‘Collateral’, the audience loved seeing him switch things up. However, since nothing has been made official yet, it’s unclear if he was ever actually approached for the ‘Miami Vice’ reboot.

For the unversed, the original show from 1984 followed undercover detectives Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs as they took on Miami’s criminal underworld. It was all neon, New Wave music, and gritty crime — pretty iconic. Michael Mann produced the TV series and later directed the 2006 film adaptation with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. The movie didn’t get much love at first, but it’s become a cult favorite thanks to its style and action.Now, the reboot’s aiming to update the classic crime saga. Expect undercover cops, drug trafficking, organized crime, and all the glitz and danger of Miami. The vibe: retro looks mixed with modern action, a neo-noir feel. Plot details are still secret, but we’ll likely see Crockett and Tubbs infiltrating criminal networks, maybe facing a big-time villain, the role Cruise was rumored for.As for the casting, here’s what we know so far: per People, Austin Butler is lined up to play Sonny Crockett, and Michael B. Jordan is expected to play Rico Tubbs. In the past, Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas played them on TV, and the 2006 movie had Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. If Cruise ever does sign on, he’ll probably be the main bad guy, setting up a showdown with the two detectives.However, it’s important to note that none of this is locked in and official yet.
