The Toyota Fortuner has a cult following in India, thanks to its commendable road presence, off-road capabilities, brand reliability and high resale value. The SUV lineup is currently in its second-generation and received its latest update in the form of 48V mild-hybrid (Neo Drive) tech in mid-2025. As per Toyota’s typical product lifecycle strategy, the Fortuner is now ready for a full generational upgrade, which is expected in late 2026.

The third-generation Toyota Fortuner is likely to make global debut towards the end of 2026, followed by its India launch in early 2027. One of its test mules was recently spied testing in Thailand, suggesting major design changes.
Design Changes Explained
1. While the prototype was fully camouflaged, its overall silhouette and muscular body built appear similar to the current generation model. However, the new Fortuner is likely to feature boxier and more upright stance with a wider front fascia.
2. Upfront, the 2026 Toyota Fortuner will feature a split headlamp setup positioned slightly lower, all-new and larger grille, redesigned bumper, slim LED DRLs and slightly lower placed fog lamp clusters. The bonnet also appears flatter than before.
3. While the alloy wheels, tailgate design, LED taillamps and rear bumper will be thoroughly revised, the SUV is expected to retain the squared-off wheel arches, roof rails and some other design elements from the current model. One of the biggest mechanical upgrades might come in the form of an updated IMV ladder-frame architecture, sourced from the Hilux.
More Tech & Features
4. Similar to the design, the new Toyota Fortuner 2026 SUV is likely to come with a comprehensively redesigned and feature-loaded interior. It might borrow a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital driver’s display from the new Hilux.
5. The spied test mule was also seen with an ADAS radar module mounted on the lower bumper and cameras integrated behind the windscreen, hinting at the presence of Toyota Safety Sense.
6. To enhance its value proposition, Toyota might equip the new Fortuner with features such as ventilated and powered front seats, wireless charging, a 360-degree camera, a sunroof, updated connectivity features and OTA (over-the-air) updates.
Retaining Existing Engines?
7. The India-bound 2026 Toyota Fortuner is expected to be offered with the existing 2.7L petrol and 2.8L diesel engine options. The 2.8L diesel engine with Toyota’s 48V mild-hybrid system will also be available as the Fortuner Neo Drive.
8. Transmission options (6-speed manual and torque convertor automatic) and the 4WD system are also likely to be retained.
