Suzuki Motor Corp is making serious efforts to develop an in-house strong hybrid powertrain system for its compact vehicles. According to a fresh media report, the Japanese automaker is working on a range extender hybrid system with plug-in capability. Called “REEV Light”, this hybrid system uses an electric motor to drive the wheels, while the petrol engine generates electricity when needed. It will also allow to charge the battery by plugging the vehicle into an external power source.

REEV Light will take the series HEV and add external charging capability along with a “right-sized” battery. The smaller battery size is expected to significantly lower cost. In 2024, Maruti Suzuki was reported to develop a series-hybrid system for its mass-market offerings. Earlier reports suggested that Maruti’s new series strong hybrid technology could debut in the updated Fronx in 2027, followed by a new sub-4 metre MPV, next-gen Baleno, Swift and Brezza.
How Will It Work?
Maruti Suzuki’s series strong hybrid system and REEV Light systems are closely related but slightly different. In this system, the electric motor powers the wheels, while the battery supplies electricity to the motor. The battery pack can be charged using an external power source, similar to a plug-in hybrid or EV setup.
When the battery charge gets low or additional range is required, the petrol engine generates electricity to power the electric motor. Unlike a conventional hybrid technology, the range extender hybrid system doesn’t use the engine to drive the wheels directly.
Why is Suzuki Developing Range Extender Hybrid System?
The main reason for developing a range extender hybrid system could be to reduce range anxiety during longer journeys, as the petrol engine can generate electricity when the battery charge is low. It will also allow electric driving for shorter trips. Furthermore, the “right-sized” battery pack could help reduce battery costs and keep the vehicle lighter.
It’s important to note that Suzuki hasn’t yet confirmed which models will be benefited with REEV Light system. However, the technology could eventually be used in Maruti Suzuki’s smaller cars in India.
