NordVPN call protection is now available on Android to flag potential scams

Today, NordVPN is launching a call protection feature to Android users in the US, the UK, the EU, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Australia, and Canada. This warns you about potential scams before you pick up the phone.

It obviously needs to know what numbers are calling you in order to work. It analyzes “various intel”, according to the official press release, to “define phone number reputation”. If it thinks it might be a scam call, you’ll be notified by a warning message displayed next to the caller’s phone number.

The feature is part of the NordVPN app, so if you already have that, there’s no additional download required. Call protection works regardless of whether you’re currently connected via VPN. You need to have a premium NordVPN subscription for call protection.

To set up call protection, go to the Threat Protection screen inside the NordVPN app for Android, and toggle it on. Once you do that, the app will offer to redirect you to your phone’s settings, where you can finish the setup by toggling all of the required settings on in your Android settings. Once you’re done, you’ll get a confirmation of the successful setup inside the NordVPN app.
