Over the next couple of years, India’s four top-selling cars from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata and Mahindra are set to receive a full generational upgrade. The Indo-Japanese automaker will introduce the next-gen Maruti Baleno hatchback with its in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain and significant changes. Meanwhile, Hyundai’s best-selling Creta midsize SUV will enter in its third generation in 2027.
The next-generation Tata Nexon (codenamed ‘Garud’) is expected to hit Indian roads next year, whereas the all-new Mahindra XUV 3XO will be based on the Vision X concept and arrive in FY2027-28. Here’s a brief overview of these upcoming new-generation cars and SUVs.
Upcoming New-Gen Cars in India
New-Gen Maruti Baleno

The next-generation Maruti Baleno is expected to launch sometime in 2027. One of the major upgrades will a new hybrid powertrain, designed and developed by Maruti Suzuki for its mass-market offerings. It’s said to be more cost effective and efficient than Toyota’s Atkinson strong hybrid technology. The new Baleno might feature a Z12E, three-cylinder petrol engine, paired with an electric motor and a battery pack ranging between 1.5kWh-2kWh.
New-Gen Hyundai Creta
The next-generation Hyundai Creta will be larger, better and more tech-loaded than the current model. While retaining the existing 1.5L NA petrol, turbo petrol and diesel engines, the SUV will be offered with a new strong hybrid powertrain. It’s expected to feature an electrified version of the 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine, making it Hyundai’s first hybrid offering in India. The new Creta might also get updated dual screens, upgraded ADAS and several new features.
New-Gen Tata Nexon
The all-new Tata Nexon is likely to switch to a new platform, which will support multiple body styles and advanced technologies. It could be a heavily modified version of the existing X1 architecture. The subcompact SUV is expected to feature a new design language along with a more upmarket interior. The existing 120bhp, 1.2L turbo petrol engine will be carried over from the current generation, while the 1.5L diesel could be scrapped due to the upcoming BS7 emission standards.
New-Gen Mahindra XUV 3XO
As mentioned above, the next-generation Mahindra XUV 3XO will derive its design elements from the Mahindra Vision X concept, which was unveiled last year. It will be based on the brand’s all-new NU_IQ platform that’s compatible to multiple powertrains. Speculations are on rife that the subcompact SUV could become Mahindra’s first hybrid model in India. The carmaker might electrify its 1.2L, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine.
