NEW DELHI: Prasar Bharati has appointed noted lyricist and writer Prasoon Joshi as its chairman. Joshi will be overseeing the functioning of All India Radio and Doordarshan, taking charge at a time of transition for the organisation following a recent leadership exit.Union information and broadcasting minister Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated Joshi on his appointment and highlighted his creative legacy and cultural connect.In a press release issued by the ministry, he said, “My heartfelt congratulations to Shri Prasoon Joshi ji on his appointment as Chairman of the Prasar Bharati Board. Prasoon ji is a rare creative spirit celebrated across the world in advertising, literature, art and cinema, yet his heart beats unmistakably for India.”He further added, “His words carry the fragrance of our soil, and his vision reflects the timeless essence of our culture. Under his stewardship, Prasar Bharati will discover renewed energy, deeper purpose, and a fresh creative voice. My very best wishes to him for a memorable and meaningful tenure ahead.”
Joshi’s appointment after abrupt leadership exit
Joshi’s appointment follows the resignation of Navneet Kumar Sehgal, who stepped down as Prasar Bharati chairperson just under two years after assuming office.Sehgal had taken charge on March 16, 2024, after retiring as Uttar Pradesh’s additional chief secretary. However, he put in his papers in December, 2025.Officials indicated that IB had accepted his resignation, though neither the ministry nor Sehgal has publicly stated the reasons behind his exit.
Who is Prasoon Joshi?
Prasoon Joshi is widely recognised for his work as a lyricist, writer and communication expert, with contributions across films, advertising and public campaigns.He has served as Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification since 2017, where he oversaw film certification processes and engaged with the industry. Prior to that, he held senior leadership roles in advertising, including CEO of McCann World Group India and Chairman of McCann World Group Asia Pacific.He is also a trustee of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts.IB, in its press release stating Joshi’s achievements, said, “With his extensive experience in creative industries and public communication, Joshi is expected to bring a unique perspective to the leadership of Prasar Bharati at a time when public broadcasting is navigating rapid technological transformation and evolving audience expectations.”
