Samsung announces UFS 5.0 storage, and it may be in your next phone

Samsung has announced the development of its next-generation UFS 5.0 storage standard, claiming it delivers up to twice the performance of the current UFS 4.1 solution.

According to the company, the new storage technology will help reduce latency and improve response times for on-device large language models (LLMs).

The new UFS 5.0 standard is based on JEDEC’s latest embedded storage interface specification and delivers sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 9.8GB/s. According to Samsung, this makes UFS 5.0 up to twice as fast as its current UFS 4.1 storage solution.

Samsung claims the new storage solution is more than 40% more power efficient than UFS 4.1. In addition, the overall package is also 16.7 percent smaller.

Mass production of UFS 5.0 is set to begin in the fourth quarter of this year with the new storage solution available in capacities of up to 1TB.
