Samsung has unveiled its new flagship mobile image sensor, the ISOCELL HPC, featuring the industry’s first DeepPix technology that enables 16-bit RAW output. The company claims the new sensor delivers improved dynamic range and enhanced low-light performance.
The ISOCELL HPC is a 200MP camera sensor with a 1/1.3-inch optical format and 0.6μm pixels. Samsung says the new sensor captures significantly more light than its predecessor thanks to its new DeepPix technology.
According to the company, DeepPix allows each pixel to hold more light before becoming overexposed, resulting in brighter highlights, improved shadow detail, and better overall dynamic range.
Samsung also says the sensor supports 16-bit HDR, which should help it produce cleaner images with less noise, particularly in challenging lighting conditions.
Samsung claims the ISOCELL HPC can maintain HDR image quality across multiple in-sensor zoom levels, including 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, and 4x. The company says this delivers more consistent image quality regardless of the zoom level.
The sensor also supports 4K video recording at up to 180fps for smoother slow-motion footage.
The ISOCELL HPC also uses a new lens and light-guiding system that directs more light onto each pixel.
We expect the new 200MP Samsung sensor to debut in smartphones launching later this year.
