Belgium clinched their first Sultan Azlan Shah Cup title with a 1-0 victory over India in a tightly contested final on Sunday. Thibeau Stockbroekx scored the decisive goal in the 34th minute, leaving India with the silver medal.This triumph marks Belgium’s first title in only their second appearance at the tournament. India, fresh from their impressive 14-3 win against Canada on Saturday, struggled to capitalise on their three penalty corner opportunities.Despite the consistent performance of Jugraj Singh, Amit Rohidas, and Sanjay in penalty corner attacks throughout the tournament, they couldn’t breach the Belgian defence. This was India’s second loss to Belgium in the tournament, following a 3-2 defeat in the league stage.The absence of experienced players Manpreet Singh and Hardik Singh created opportunities for younger players, who managed to keep the match competitive.Belgium dominated early possession and challenged the Indian defence on both wings, forcing the Indian goalkeeper to make crucial saves. India successfully defended against Belgium’s two early penalty corners.Belgium controlled the midfield play while India took time to find their rhythm. The first half ended goalless before Belgium increased their offensive pressure.India responded with aggressive pressing and more circle entries but couldn’t penetrate Belgium’s defence in the third quarter. Stockbroekx’s goal in the 34th minute put India under pressure.In the final quarter, India made multiple attempts to equalise, but Belgium’s strong defensive structure helped them secure the victory.
