If you’re considering multiple options in the sub-4 metre SUV segment, it might be worth waiting a little longer as several new models are in the pipeline. Indigenous automakers Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, which already have strong offerings in this category, are set to introduce new rugged subcompact SUVs, possibly in 2027.
It’s important to note that the official product details are still under the wraps. However, the upcoming models are currently codenamed Tata Scarlet and Mahindra Vision S. Curious to know about these upcoming subcompact SUV? Read on.
Tata Scarlet

According to media reports, the Tata Scarlet will be based on a monocoque chassis, and is expected to feature an upright stance similar to the Sierra. The carmaker is likely to use the Nexon’s 120bhp, 1.2L turbo and Curvv’s 125bhp, 1.2L turbo petrol engines for this subcompact SUV. The Sierra’s 1.5L naturally aspirated engine could also be part of the package.
The upcoming Scarlet SUV might be offered with several advanced tech and features; however, the final list will depend on its market positioning. It is likely to be introduced as a rugged lifestyle SUV, challenging the Mahindra Thar and Maruti Jimny.
Mahindra Vision S
The Mahindra Vision S concept-based subcompact SUV is expected to join the Scorpio family. Spy images reveal that the production-ready model will stay close the concept, featuring boxy and upright stance. However, the adventure accessories seen on the concept could either be removed or offered as optional extras.
One of its test mules was spied with a conventional analogue instrument cluster with a small MID, fabric seat upholstery and manually adjustable AC dials, suggesting it could be a lower or mid-spec variant. Higher trims, however, might be equipped with a panoramic sunroof, which could be a fixed glass unit or a partially opening one.
The engine setup is expected to be borrowed from the Mahindra XUV 3XO, which is available with a 1.5L, 4-cylinder diesel engine. This motor pushes out a maximum power of 117bhp and 300Nm of torque in the XUV 3XO.
