TCL shows off its Super Pixel and Inkjet-printed OLED displays at MWC


TCL is one of the leading display manufacturers, and MWC is a breeding ground for innovation, so it only makes sense to show off its latest developments. TCL’s Super Pixel display tech and Inkjet-printed OLED displays were both announced earlier this year at CES, and will make their way to a wide range of devices, with TCL showcasing a diverse portfolio of next-generation displays.

Thanks to an additional 1.8% more sub-pixels inside the OLED layer, TCL’s Super Pixel displays achieve higher sharpness and a clearer image compared to sub-pixel rendering (SPR) OLEDs. But the more important bit is that TCL’s new display tech also reduces the processing load on the controller, which leads to a 25% lower energy consumption. The other benefit is higher refresh rates, with TCL achieving up to 165Hz for a buttery-smooth user experience.


TCL Super Pixel High-Clarity Mobile Display (6.9”)

We start off with a trio of 6.9-inch Super Pixel smartphone displays. The first one brings exceptional image clarity with a 1,200 × 2,608px resolution and 420 ppi density. The panel features an 8T LTPO backplane alongside Full in Active Area (FIAA) technology and an adaptive brightness of up to 2,000 nits. TCL also achieved impressively thin 0.5mm top and bottom bezels and 0.8mm on the sides.


TCL Low-power Consumption Super Pixel Mobile Display (6.9”)

TCL also demoed another 6.9-inch Super Pixel panel, which is touted as “a benchmark in energy efficiency”. This panel is once again an 8T LTPO OLED with 420 ppi density, and it delivers 10% lower IC power consumption while also reducing chipset consumption by 25% compared to conventional OLEDs.


TCL Super Pixel High Refresh Rate Mobile Display (6.9”)

The third Super Pixel panel is built on 7T LTPS architecture and brings a dynamically adjusting 60-165Hz refresh rate. It also features 420 ppi density and manages up to 2,000 nits High Brightness Mode (HBM).

In addition to its Super Pixel lineup, TCL also showcased several Inkjet-printed (IJP) OLED display panels. These “printed panels” offer easily scalable panel sizes, a simpler production process with reduced costs and improved performance over traditional OLED manufacturing.


TCL Ultra-thin Rigid IJP OLED Notebook Display (14”)

TCL revealed a 14-inch IJP OLED laptop screen, which is just 0.77mm thick and weighs 77 grams.


TCL Foldable & Portable IJP OLED Monitor Display (28”)

We also got to see a portable folding IJP OLED monitor, which can go from 16 to 28 inches, thanks to its tri-fold design. It’s remarkably thin at 4.48mm and features the world’s largest waterdrop hinge.

TCL also has a smaller 5.65-inch IJP OLED display, which can be used in smartphones. It boasts an impressive 490 ppi density and has a Real Stripe RGB pixel arrangement for pleasing visuals and sharpness.

But that’s still not everything TCL has in store. How about a ridiculously bright 6.9-inch OLED panel rated at a bizarre 15,000 (!) nits peak brightness. This is likely peak local brightness in HDR scenarios, but that’s still an impressive feat.

TCL also showcased an eye-friendly 6.9-inch OLED with 2nd gen circular polarizer technology for reduced glare and a “book-like” reading experience.


TCL World’s Smallest Si-Micro LED Display (0.05”)

We also got a sneak peek at the world’s smallest Silicon-based Micro LED meant for AR glasses. It features a 256 × 86px resolution and razor-sharp 5,080 ppi density and a whopping 4 million nits peak brightness.
