South Africa captain Temba Bavuma produced a record-breaking innings against Australia, registering his highest Test score and helping his side recover from a precarious position to post a formidable total on Day 3 of the second Test at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Tuesday.Bavuma’s 179 is the fourth-highest individual score by a South African captain in a home Test, behind Hashim Amla’s 208 against West Indies in Centurion in 2014, Amla’s 201 against England in Cape Town in 2016 and Graeme Smith‘s 183 against England in Cape Town in 2010.The knock also ranks as the second-highest Test score at Gqeberha, behind Herschelle Gibbs’ 196 against India in 2001.Bavuma’s innings proved crucial after South Africa slumped to 110-6, putting the hosts in danger of surrendering control of the contest. The skipper held the innings together, batting for 334 deliveries and striking 18 fours and a six as South Africa declared at 425-9.The recovery was among the most remarkable in Test cricket. South Africa’s total was the second-highest innings score by a team after losing six wickets for 110 runs or fewer, behind England’s 446 against Pakistan at Lord’s in 2010, when they had been reduced to 102-7.Bavuma had walked in at 12-2 on the opening day and remained at the crease as South Africa slipped to 92-5 amid rain and a wet outfield on the following day. His patience and composure proved decisive as the lower order rallied around him.Marco Jansen provided the first major support, adding 132 runs with Bavuma for the seventh wicket. Jansen scored 85 before being dismissed by Scott Boland, who finished with figures of 5-81.Simon Harmer then joined his captain and the pair put together a decisive 183-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Harmer contributed 82, his maiden Test half-century, to help swing the contest in South Africa’s favour.Bavuma reached his fifth Test century off 226 balls before accelerating to surpass his previous best of 172 against West Indies in Johannesburg in 2023. His innings ended when Mitchell Starc dismissed him, with South Africa declaring soon afterwards.Australia faced a difficult finish to the day, losing Nic Maddinson for a four-ball duck to Kagiso Rabada. The visitors were 3-1 at stumps.Australia won the opening Test in Durban by 214 runs and lead the three-match series 1-0. South Africa, the reigning World Test champions, are looking to respond as both sides target a place in the 2027 World Test Championship final.
