September 2026 was a profitable month for the Indian automobile industry, with total domestic wholesale sales reaching 4,57,604 units, reflecting a strong 20.9% YoY (year-on-year) growth. Maruti Suzuki continued to lead the market with a 39.7% share, followed by Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai and Kia.

Interestingly, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno emerged as India’s best-selling car in September 2026, with total sales of 25,392 units compared to 13,173 units in the same month last year, registering a massive 93% YoY growth. The hatchback outsold Tata’s best-selling Nexon and Punch sub-4 metre SUVs, which recorded sales of 20,456 units and 20,333 units in September 2026, respectively.

The Tata Nexon recorded a 9% YoY decline in sales, while the Tata Punch recorded a 28% YoY growth. The Hyundai Creta and Mahindra Scorpio (including Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic) secured the seventh and ninth positions, respectively, with sales of 17,657 units and 17,313 units.
Maruti Suzuki’s Fronx, WagonR and Dzire ranked fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively among India’s best-selling cars in September 2026. A total of 19,282 units of the Fronx were sold last month, up from 13,767 units in September 2025, registering a strong 40% YoY growth.
The Maruti WagonR recorded sales of 18,835 units compared to 15,388 units in the corresponding month last year. Meanwhile, the Dzire compact sedan clocked total sales of 17,754 units, down from 20,038 units in the same month previous year, reflecting an 11% YoY decline.
The Swift and Ertiga rounded off the top 10 list, securing the eighth and tenth positions with sales of 17,399 units and 16,911 units, respectively. Both models recorded positive YoY growth of 12% and 40%, respectively.
