The Indian passenger vehicle market registered strong growth in August 2026. A total of 4,41,576 units were sold last month, compared with 3,27,719 units in the same month last year. However, the industry witnessed a 4.7% MoM (month-on-month) decline in sales.

The Tata Punch emerged as India’s top-selling model, clocking total sales 21,320 units. Meanwhile, the Maruti Ertiga continued to retain the top position in the 7-seater SUV/MPV segment.

Key Insights:
Maruti Suzuki recorded sales of 18,516 units compared to 18,445 units in the same month last year, translating into a 0.4% YoY (year-on-year) growth.
The Mahindra Scorpio became the second top-selling 7-seater in August 2026, with total sales of 15,576 units against 9,840 units in August 2025. This resulted in a strong 58.3% YoY growth.
The Toyota Innova and Innova Hycross, combined, secured the third position with total sales of 8,963 units against 9,304 units in the corresponding month last year. It translated into a 3.7% YoY decline.
The Mahindra XUV 7XO and XUV 700 recorded combined sales of 8,541 units in August 2026, compared with 4,956 units in the same month last year. Securing the fourth positioned was yet another Mahindra – the Bolero. The carmaker sold 8,159 units of the Bolero in August 2026 against 8,109 units the same month last year, reflecting a 0.6% YoY growth.
The Kia Carens and Carens Clavis recorded combined sales of 6,093 units in August 2026, compared with 6,822 units in the corresponding month previous year. It accounted a 7.0% YoY growth.
The seventh, eighth and ninth positions were grabbed by the Mahindra 9S, Toyota Fortuner and Maruti Suzuki XL6, respectively. The Toyota Rumion rounded off the top 10 list of best-selling 7-seater models last month, recording sales of 2,396 units compared with just 68 units in August, 2026.
