India’s top four OEMs – Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Mahindra and Hyundai – are gearing up to expand their sub-4 metre model lineup in 2026. Maruti Suzuki is likely to introduce the updated Fronx with an ADAS suite and strong hybrid powertrain, while Tata has planned an all-new subcompact SUV (codenamed Scarlet) that will arrive in the second half of 2026. Mahindra & Mahindra might debut the production-ready version of the Vision S concept, expected to be a subcompact SUV positioned within the Scorpio family. The Hyundai Bayon compact crossover launch has also planned for 2026. Here’s a closer look at these upcoming subcompact SUVs.
Upcoming Subcompact SUVs
Maruti Fronx Facelift

The updated Maruti Fronx has been spotted testing multiple times. Spy images reveal that the compact crossover will come with an ADAS (autonomous driver assistance system) suite. It could also be the brand’s the first model to feature Suzuki’s next-generation 48V Super Ene-Charge (SEC) hybrid powertrain. According to media reports, this strong hybrid powertrain will be significantly more efficient and economical than Toyota’s Atkinson cycle powertrain.
Tata Scarlet
Official details of the upcoming Tata subcompact SUV are yet to be revealed. However, early reports suggest that the Tata Scarlet will be based on a monocoque chassis and share several design elements from the Sierra SUV. It’s expected to have an upright and bold stance, and offer several advanced features. The Scarlet could be offered with the Curvv’s 1.2L and Nexon’s 1.2L turbo petrol engines. It might also borrow the new 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine from the upcoming Sierra.
Mahindra Baby Scorpio
The production-ready Mahindra Vision S concept is expected to debut in late 2026, followed by its market launch in 2027. The final model is likely to stay close to the concept, featuring inverted L-shaped headlamps, roof-mounted lights, flush door handles and inverted L-shaped taillamps. The feature kit might include a panoramic sunroof, dual screens, three spoke steering wheel and more. The baby Mahindra Scoprio will be based on the brand’s all-new NU.IQ modular monocoque platform, which supports ICE, hybrid and electric powertrains.
Hyundai Bayon
The Bayon compact crossover will be Hyundai’s answer to the Maruti Fronx and Tata Punch. Interestingly, it will be the first Hyundai to feature an all-new locally-developed 1.2L TGDi petrol engine, which is reported to be more compact and fuel efficient than Creta’s 1.5L turbo petrol engine. This new gasoline engine is hybrid ready, and is likely to power Hyundai’s future hybrid vehicles.
