While Udta Teer revolves around national security, its USP is its comedy. The music adds to the fun, too, with its quirky lyrics complementing the film’s humour. Bollywood references and well-timed jokes add to the fun, while the supporting cast ensures that Ayushmann Khurrana isn’t carrying the comedy alone. If you wanted Dhurandhar with more humour, this is it. Udta Teer is in cinemas now.

Udta Teer is the kind of comedy that makes you wish filmmakers would trust good writing a little more often. Its first half delivers the laughs without resorting to cheap tricks, and its cast is more than happy to play along with the madness. The second half could have held on to that for longer, but the film still leaves a good impression. Bilal’s loyalties may be all over the place, but the film’s intentions are clear: to entertain without insulting the audience’s intelligence.

True to form, Ayushmann once again picks an interesting premise and delivers a committed performance. Udta Teer has plenty of promise, but its glaring change of identity ultimately derails it. What could have been an irreverent spy satire loses its nerve and retreats into familiar territory. A film that begins by taking a refreshing detour, eventually plays it safe.

If you are an arrow seeking a refreshingly different patriotic film, Udta Teer is the right target. It needs better promotion, as it has been released in a week with multiple releases, so hopefully the Dharma-Ayushmann combination can give it a sufficient edge at the box office to get the vital word-of-mouth.

It is genuinely refreshing to come across a mainstream Hindi film that can be enjoyed with the entire family without trying too hard to be clever or funny. Udta Teer delivers the kind of uncomplicated entertainment that has become increasingly welcome. You may spend much of the film trying to figure out what will happen next, but the best part is simply enjoying the ride.
