With its product offensive Vision 3.0 strategy, Maruti Suzuki aims to expand its portfolio from 18 to 28 models with a strong focus on SUVs, MPVs and premium Nexa offerings. The carmaker will also adapt multiple powertrain approach to regain its 50 percent share in the domestic market by 2030. While the Maruti e Vitara is the brand’s first electric offering, it will be followed nearly 5 new EV models in the next 4-5 years. One of them is reported to be an MPV based on the 27PL skateboard architecture, codenamed Maruti YMC.
As of now, there is no official word on the upcoming Maruti 7-seater electric MPV. According to media reports, the YMC might enter production by the end of this year. It’s expected to be based on the Suzuki Spacia hybrid MPV, which is sold in the Japanese market.
Upcoming Maruti 7-Seater Electric MPV – What to Expect?
While the Japan-spec Suzuki Spacia measures 3.395mm in length and offers a three-row seats layout, the India-bound version is likely to be longer and feature three-row seating configuration. Unlike the Spacia, the upcoming Maruti electric MPV might miss out on premium features such as sliding rear door. However, it’s expected to retain the upright and boxy stance along with rectangular headlamps, a blacked-out grille with chrome embellishments and a hefty front bumper with a wide air dam. The EV is likely to share features from the Fronx compact crossover and the Baleno hatchback.
Expected Powertrain
It would be quite early to comment on its engine specifications. Reports suggest that it might borrow powertrain from the e Vitara, which is available with the 49kWh and 61kWh battery pack options. Both batteries, paired with a front-axle mounted motor, are claimed to deliver a range of 440km and 543km, respectively.
Toyota’s Derivative of Maruti YMC
Toyota Kirloskar Motor will also introduce a rebadged version the YMC electric MPV within a year after its launch. However, it will feature Toyota’s familiar design language while sharing platform, powertrain and features.
