Volkswagen’s New Affordable SUV (Kylaq-Based) – What to Expect?


The sub-4 metre SUV segment, which is already crowded with multiple offerings, will soon witness further expansion with the addition of new products from Renault, Volkswagen, Honda, Vinfast and other OEMs. Talking about Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, the carmaker currently offers the Kylaq under Skoda brand, while Volkswagen is expected to enter the segment with a new subcompact SUV by mid-2027.

Different Styling

Similar to the Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq, the upcoming VW subcompact SUV will share its platform, powertrains and features with the Skoda Kylaq. However, it will follow Volkswagen’s design language and look different from its Skoda sibling. While product details are scanty at the moment, the model is expected to feature a newly-designed grille, revised front and rear bumpers, new front and rear lights and a slightly revised rear section.

Reports suggest that the VW SUV lineup might include sportier GT Line trims feautring blacked-out accents. The interior might also receive a different treatment. The new Volkswagen subcompact SUV is likely to have more features on offer than its Skoda counterpart, which might later be introduced in the Kylaq lineup as well.

Engine, Gearboxes & Specs

Official engine specifications are still under the wraps. However, the VW compact SUV could be offered with the Skoda Kylaq’s 1.0L, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and two gearbox options – a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. With direct injection and turbocharging, this engine produces a maximum power of 115bhp and 178Nm of torque.

Similar to the Kylay, the new Volkswagen sub-4 metre SUV is likely to feature front disc and rear drum brakes. Its suspension setup could be borrowed from the Skoda Kushaq, which uses an independent front and non-independent torsion beam unit at the rear.

Expected Price Range

Prices of the new Volkswagen small SUV are expected to start around Rs 7.60 for the entry-level variant and go up to Rs 13 -14 lakh for the fully-loaded variant.
