We go hands-on with the Lenovo Legion Tab gaming tablet and the tough ThinkTab X11

Motorola focused on the phone side of the business – in case you missed it, here is our hands-on with the Moto Razr Fold – while Lenovo brought new tablets and laptops. We went hands-on with several new devices at the MWC and here we will cover the Legion Tab gaming tablet and the rugged ThinkTab X11.

Lenovo Legion Tab

There are only a few powerful sub-9” tablets – Apple has its iPad mini, whenever it remembers to upgrade it, while Android makers prefer slates 10” and above.

The Lenovo Legion Tab has an 8.8” display, an IPS LCD panel with 3,040 x 1,904px resolution (16:10). It runs at 165Hz and offers 600 nits typical brightness with a boost to 750 nits.

The tablet measures 206.5 x 128.5 x 7.59mm and weighs 360g. This is with a 9,000mAh battery inside. The cool thing about the Legion Tab is that it has two USB-C ports – you can use one for charging and the other for accessories or to output to a monitor.

The Tab is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 – it’s not the Elite version, but Lenovo is betting that its Coldfront Vapor chamber cooling system will enable better sustained performance. The upgraded Coldfront chamber improves heat dissipation efficiency by 32% compared to the previous generation Lenovo Tab.

The chipset is paired with fast LPDDR5T RAM running at 10,667Mbps and top shelf storage, UFS 4.1 Pro. The Legion Tab can be configured with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB storage.

The Lenovo AI Engine+ offers helpful features like noise cancellation for voice chats, boosting certain in-game sounds to help you out and also scene-based touch sensitivity adjustment.

Most of the Legion family is only available in China. However, Lenovo is bucking this trend with the Legion Tab – it will be available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) this April. The starting price is €1,000.

The tablet comes in Eclipse Black, Glacier White and Surge Green (that last one is only on the FIFA Edition).

Lenovo ThinkTab X11

This one is designed for workers in logistics, manufacturing, construction, transportation and energy – but consumers might find it useful too. It’s certainly an interesting device.

The Lenovo ThinkTab X11 has a removable battery, which is rare enough. You don’t even have to undo any screws to get it out. This promises extended use with quick battery swaps, but it has another advantage too.

It enables “battery-less mode”, which powers the tablet from the wall or in a dock inside a vehicle. This way you can run the tablet 24/7 without having to worry about a lithium-ion battery – even with the latest improvements in chemistry, all lithium batteries have a finite number of charge cycles.

Like its cousin above, the ThinkTab X11 has two USB-C ports. This allows the tablet to charge and to connect to peripherals simultaneously. Lenovo also has a USB-C to Pogo Pin converter, which allows the tablet to be used with a dock – pulling it out of and putting it into a dock is much faster than fiddling with a USB-C cable. And it’s more efficient than wireless charging.

The X11 is built tough – it has passed MIL-STD-810H testing and is rated IP68 for dust and water resistance. The touchscreen can work with gloved and wet hands. Alternatively, you can use the built-in stylus to operate the screen (the stylus slots into the top left corner).

The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass (we’re not sure which version). It’s a 10.95” LCD with 2,560 x 1,600px resolution (16:10). It reaches 600 nits in high brightness mode.

The tablet is powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 3.2 storage. For such a durable device, the software situation is disappointing – it runs Android 16 out of the box and OS updates will leave it at Android 18 (i.e. it’s only getting 2 OS updates). At least Lenovo has committed to 4 years of security patches.

We already mentioned the dual USB-C ports, we should also note that the battery capacity is 10,200mAh. And again, you can swap the battery to extend the run time or operate the tablet without it.

Other connectivity features worth mentioning are Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. Oh, and there is an NFC reader on the front – this makes scanning items for an inventory system easier.

The X11 is on the chunkier side and measures 9.93mm thick and weighs 650g. There is just the one color option available called “Eclipse Black”.

The Lenovo ThinkTab X11 will be available in the EMEA region starting in April at a price of €500.
