When the body speaks: A journey beyond form in contemporary dance
TRANZ 2.0, a performance at the Sapphire Annual Gala, showcases a radical rethinking of dance pedagogy, emphasizing movement as personal self-expression. Choreographer Sudarshan Chakravorty’s ‘perpetual workshop’ encourages dancers to discover their own voices, transforming instinct into expression and a path to self-realization. This initiative has evolved into a globally recognized force in contemporary dance.

TRANZ 2.0 unfolds as part of the Sapphire Annual Gala—an evening that is as much about performance as it is about philosophy. Rooted in a radical rethinking of dance pedagogy, the showcase moves away from rigid structures and embraces movement as a deeply personal act of self-expression.For choreographer Sudarshan Chakravorty dance is not imposed—it is discovered. “The classroom transforms into a space of inquiry, where dancers are encouraged to listen to the quiet, subconscious impulses that precede movement. Here, the body is no longer a vessel shaped by external aesthetics, but a living archive of memory, experience, and emotion,” he said.

This evolving practice has shaped into more than just an institution—it is a ‘perpetual workshop,’ constantly redefining itself. From its beginnings as a neighbourhood initiative to becoming a globally recognised force in contemporary dance in Eastern India, its journey reflects a larger shift toward acceptance, change, and individuality, guided by the vision of Sudarshan.“This annual show is deeply personal—a reflection of my own journey of transforming instinct into expression, and expression into life itself. Over the years, dancers here have moved beyond learned compositions to discover their own voice, their own language—where the body becomes both altar and inquiry, and movement becomes a path to self-realisation,” said Sudarshan.
