Hybrid cars are emerging as a preferred alternative to petrol and diesel cars in the Indian passenger vehicle market. Car manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Hyundai and Kia are gearing to expand their hybrid product portfolio in the coming years. In 2027, Maruti Suzuki and Renault will introduce two affordable and highly fuel-efficient hybrid SUVs.
The new Maruti Fronx facelift is expected to debut with a locally developed series hybrid powertrain, which will be significantly cheaper than Toyota’s Atkinson strong hybrid system. Meanwhile, Renault India will introduce an all-new sub-4 metre hybrid SUV based on the Bridger concept. Here’s a brief at these upcoming affordable hybrid SUVs.
Maruti Fronx Hybrid
According to reports, Maruti Suzuki’s new strong hybrid system will be based on the brand’s proven 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine. The engine will work as a range extender and will be paired with an electric motor and a battery pack. This hybrid setup is likely to offer fuel efficiency of over 35kmpl.
The overall design and styling of the Maruti Fronx hybrid are expected to remain largely similar to the regular model. However, i could feature ‘Hybrid’ badges on both the exterior and interior.
Renault Bridger
The Renault Bridger will be designed on the brand’s localised RGMP (Renault Group Modular Platform) architecture, which supports ICE (internal combustion engine), hybrid and electric powertrains. The French automaker is developing multi-mode hybrid system specifially for emerging markets, including India. The Bridger SUV is expected to feature a 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a multi-mode electric motor hybrid drive system.
Similar to its concept, the production-ready Renault Bridger will feature a boxy, upright stance and a high ground clearance. It could also borrow several design elements from the Renault Duster. Renault has confirmed that the new subcompact will offer a class-leading rear knee room of 200mm and a boot space of 400-litres.
