Renault has announced an aggressive product strategy for the Indian market, which includes the launch of seven new models and the introduction of two new architectures supporting ICE (internation combustion engine), CNG, electric and hybrid powertrains.

For this year, Renault India has planned two major launches – the return of the Duster nameplate which has already taken place, and the brand’s first hybrid SUV – the Renault Duster hybrid.

Following the launch of the Renault Duster hybrid, the French automaker will introduce a premium three-row SUV based on the Duster in 2027. The model was showcased as the Renault Boreal for global markets last year. However, the 7-seater Renault Duster is expected to feature several design and feature differences compared to the Boreal.

Strong Hybrid Powertrain

The upcoming Renault hybrid SUVs will feature a 109PS, 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with 49PS electric motor, a 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 20PS starter generator. Its combined output stands at 160PS and 172Nm. The hybrid powertrain is paired with a clutchless multi-mode gearbox, featuring four gears for the petrol engine and two gears for the electric motor. This setup improves the overall fuel efficiency, while reducing mechanical losses.

How Does It Works?

When you press the Start button, the electric motor powers the wheels directly. It results a silent start with instant torque and no fuel consumption. During city driving at speeds of around 50-60kmph, Renault claims that the Duster hybrid can drive in EV model for up to 80% of time, depending on traffic conditions.

When you accelerate it hard, the petrol engine, electric motor and starter generator work together, to deliver a combined power of 160PS. At higher speeds, the petrol engine drives the vehicle, while the electric motor assists during acceleration and overtaking.

Design, Features & More

The Renault Duster hybrid will look identical to its ICE counterpart, expected for the ‘Hybrid’ badging. The upcoming 7-seater Renault Duster will share its platform, design elements and features with the standard model. However, it will be longer and more spacious, accommodating three rows of seats.
