The Indian electric vehicle (EV) market is gradually gaining momentum. Aiming to strengthen their presence in this emerging segment, carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, BYD and Vinfast are gearing to expand their EV product portfolio in the coming years. Targeting the family EV buyers, Maruti Suzuki, Toyota and Tata will introduce 7-seater electric cars by the end of this year.
The launch of the Tata Safari EV has already been confirmed for the 2026 Diwali season, while Maruti YMC compact electric MPV (codenamed YMC) is expected to arrive in the second of half of 2026. Toyota Kirloskar Motor will also introduce its own derivative of the Maruti YMC with distinct styling.
Upcoming 7-Seater Electric Cars In 2026
Tata Safari EV
Similar to the Harrier EV, the Tata Safari EV will be built on the Acti.ev+ platform and expected to come with 65kWh and 75kWh battery pack option. The higher trims could be exclusively offered with the larger battery pack paired with a dual motor AWD setup.
As far as range is concerned, the Tata Harrier EV offers a claimed ARAI range of 538km with 65kWh RWD, 627km with 75kWh RWD and 622km with 75kWh AWD configuration. The Safari EV is expected to deliver a range of over 500km per charge. The SUV might also support 100kW DC fast charging.
Maruti YMC
Maruti Suzuki has already started testing its upcoming electric family car, internally known as YMC. Spy shots suggest that the MPV will feature a closed-off grille, sporty front bumper with air vents, aero-optimized alloy wheels, shark-fin antenna, connected taillamp clusters and rear bumper with reflectors.
Details remain limited at this moment. However, the upcoming Maruti electric MPV is expected to share 49kWh and 61kWh battery packs with the e Vitara. It’s expected to offer a range of over 550kkm.
Toyota’s Version of YMC
Toyota will also launch its own version of the Maruti YMC. While it will share the same platform, components, powertrain and features, the Toyota model is expected to feature a different design language.
