The subcompact SUV segment, which is already flooded with numerous options, will soon witness the arrival of new contenders from Hyundai, Volkswagen, Mahindra and Renault. Hyundai’s Bayon based compact crossover is slated to hit roads in the second half of 2026, while Volkswagen will introduce a new sub-4 metre SUV by 2026 or 2027. The production-versions of the Mahindra Vision S and Renault Bridger concepts are expected to go on sale in 2027.
While the arrival time of these upcoming subcompact SUVs is still somtime away, let’s take a look at their key details we know so far.
Hyundai Bayon

The Hyundai Bayon-based compact crossover could become the brand’s first vehicle to be powered by an all-new locally-developed 1.2L TGDi petrol engine. This new powertrain will be hybrid-ready and power Hyundai’s future compact hybrid/non-hybrid models. It’s said to be more compact and fuel efficient than Creta’s 160bhp, 1.5L turbo petrol engine. Similar to Hyundai’s new breed cars, it’s expected to be packed with several premium features.
Volkswagen Subcompact SUV

Volkswagen’s upcoming sub-4 metre SUV will share its platform, powertrain, features and components with the Skoda Kylaq. However, its design language will be completely different. It could get a sportier GT Line trim with blacked-out accents. Under the hood, the new Volkswagen SUV is likely to feature a 1.0L, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine, borrowed from the Skoda Kylaq.
Mahindra Vision S

The production-ready Mahindra Vision S is expected to stay largely true to its concept. However, it will likely to drop some of the adventure accessories or these might come as a sperate variant. Spy images reveal the SUV will feature boxy and upright stance. Powering the Vision S could be a 1.5L, four-cylinder diesel engine, sourced from the XUV 3XO. This motor pushes out a maximum power of 117bhp with 300Nm; however, these figures could be different for the Vision S.
Renault Bridger

Renault India’s Chennai manufacturing facility will serve as production hub for the Renault Bridger, catering to both domestic and global markets. Based on the new RGMP platform, the subcompact SUV is claimed to offer uncompromised cabin space despite its compact footprint. The Bridger is likely to be offered with an all-new 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol and 1.2L turbo petrol engine options.
