Hybrid car sales in India witnessed a significant growth in FY2026. Nearly 1.23 lakh hybrid vehicles were sold during this period, gaining a 2.7% share of the PV (passenger vehicle) market. Toyota Kirloskar Motor continued to dominate the segment with more than 82% market share, followed by Maruti Suzuki and Honda Cars India.

Considering the strong demand of hybrid vehicles, India’s top five car manufactures including Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai and Kia are planning to expand their presence in this segment. Here’re the key highlights of each brand’s future hybrid strategy.

Maruti Suzuki Hybrid Plans

Maruti Suzuki currently sells the Grand Vitara and Invicto with Toyota’s Atkinson hybrid powertrain. The Indo-Japanese automaker will continue to using this strong hybrid system for its rebadged models while also introducing its in-house developed series hybrid technology. Compared to Toyota’s series-parallel hybrid system, Maruti’s series hybrid powertrain is expected to have simpler architecture and could be more cost effective and efficient.

The new Maruti Fronx facelift is expected to be the first model to debut with the brand’s in-house hybrid powertrain in 2027. The company will use this series hybrid system in future small and compact offerings including the new-gen Baleno, Swift and Brezza.  

Hyundai Hybrid Plans

Hyundai has confirmed eight new hybrid vehicles for the Indian market slated to arrive by 2030. The hybrid lineup is likely to include the next-generation Creta, i20, Venue, Bayon and Palisade. The all-new Hyundai Creta, scheduled to launch in 2027, could be the brand’s first hybrid model in India.

According to reports, the carmaker might pair its proven 1.5L petrol engine with a hybrid setup. Rumour also has it that Hyundai is working on a hybrid-ready 1.2L turbo petrol engine for future models.

Kia Hybrid Plans

Kia India is all set to launch the Seltos, new-gen Sonet, Sorento three-row SUV and Carnival MPV with hybrid powertrain by 2030. The Kia Seltos hybrid is expected to arrive in 2027 alongside the all-new Sonet and Sorento.

While official powertrain details are yet to be revealed, Kia is likely to use an electrified version of the 1.5L petrol engine for the Seltos and Sonet. The Kia Carnival hybrid could feature the same 1.6L turbo petrol hybrid powertrain offered in global markets.  

Mahindra Hybrid Plans

Mahindra & Mahindra is currently evaluating multiple hybrid powertrains including strong hybrids and range-extender EVs. The Mahindra XUV 7XO hybrid (codenamed W613) might hit roads in 2027, followed by the Mahindra XEV 9e range-extender hybrid (codenamed W623) in 2028. The carmaker is reportedly evaluating both 1.2L and 1.5L engines for hybrid applications. More Mahindra SUVs are expected to go hybrid in the coming years.

Tata Hybrid Plans

Tata Motors has stated that it remains open to hybrid technology, depending on market demand. The carmaker is closely studying the segment from a competitiveness standpoint. If Tata decides to introduce hybrid vehicles, its premium and larger models are likely to be the first to receive the technology.
