Volkswagen India has received a global approval for a sub-4 metre SUV project, with an estimated cost of around 25 million Euros (Rs 275 crore). While official details of the upcoming model are still under the wraps, it’s expected to be Volkswagen sibling of the Skoda Kylaq. This means, the new Volkswagen compact SUV and Skoda Kyalq will share their platform, engines, components and features. However, the design language will be the key differentiator between the two models.
Expected Price & Competition
The upcoming Volkswagen compact SUV for India is expected to be priced around Rs 8 lakh for the base variant and nearly Rs 13 lakh for the top-end trim. At this price point, it will become the most affordable Volkswagen SUV in the country. In the highly competitive subcompact SUV segment, it will take on the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Skoda Kylaq, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.
Different Design Language
Following a strategy similar to that for the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, the upcoming Volkswagen subcompact SUV is expected to feature a different design from its Skoda sibling. The model is likely to feature Volkswagen’s familiar front grille, Taigun-inspired LED slim headlamps and LED DRLS and differently designed front bumper. The SUV lineup could also include a sportier GT Line variant, featuring blacked-out treatment on the exterior and interior.
Kylaq-Like Interior & Features
The interior layout and features of the new Volkswagen compact SUV are expected to be largely similar to the Skoda Kylaq. It could be equipped with features such as a large touchscreen, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone connectivity, in-car connectivity suite, USB Type C slots, auto dimming IRVM, keyless entry and go, a sunroof and more.
Turbo-Petrol Engine
Under the hood, the new Volkswagen subcompact SUV is expected to be powered by a 115bhp, 1.0L, three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, paired with an 8-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox.
