Among the myriad of announcements at MWC 2026, HMD announced its plans to bring modern smartphone features to its feature phone lineup in the coming months. HMD wants to expand digital access to under-connected users worldwide through a set of features and services, including a digital wallet, an AI assistant and video calling. These services are set to launch throughout 2026, with key markets like India being the starting point.
HMD’s digital wallet will deliver secure remittances for receiving, storing and cashing out funds through local payment systems. The service is set to debut in India in the first half of this year and will get a wider rollout later on. HMD is boasting device-level security with PIN protection and revealed its digital wallet is developed alongside fintech firm Kivi3 and blockchain company Polygon Labs.

AI has been making its way to nearly every device form factor, and HMD wants to integrate it into its upcoming feature phones. HMD has partnered with India’s Sarvam AI to develop a dedicated AI assistant that will allow users to perform certain tasks via their voice. These include basic tasks such as making calls, setting alarms, and turning on the phone’s torch, but HMD will also provide an AI chat experience for simple queries.
In addition to its AI assistant, HMD is also bringing a pilot project for an AI companion for elderly users. The service, which is co-developed with InTouch, will provide companionship tailored for elderly users and is expected to begin trial testing in Europe first, followed by a global rollout.
HMD is also bringing video calling and an improved messaging experience via its new Xpress Chat app. The app will allow video conferencing via the front-facing camera and will also support voice messaging, group chats and photo sharing.
