Apple wants to pay publishers to use their content in Siri AI

According to a new report, Apple wants to make content deals with online publishers, possibly worth up to nine figures, for the new Siri AI to be able to use their stuff so it can answer questions about current events and information.

Apple has allegedly proposed a variable compensation plan. Payments would only be made to the publishers it partners with if their content is used in Siri AI.

Apple wants to be proactive here and play the good guy so that it can avoid being sued by publishers for using their content for AI services. This isn’t just a theoretical possibility, either. Some publishers have already sued OpenAI and Microsoft for exactly this.

On the other hand, other companies have chosen to partner with AI providers instead, and take their money, rather than go to court which may deprive them of a revenue stream for years.

It wouldn’t even be the first time Apple has done something like this. It already partners with publishers for showing their content in Apple News+, and has even struck some deals for rights to use publishers’ content for AI training.
