Mahindra & Mahindra is considering to foray into the constantly growing hybrid passenger vehicle segment, with its first hybrid model expected to arrive in 2027 or 2028. According to reports, the indigenous automaker is exploring both strong hybrid and range-extender EV (electric vehicle), codenamed W601 and W623, respectively. The brand’s first strong hybrid SUV could be the XUV 7XO, based on the monocoque platform, followed by the INGLO architecture-based XEV 9e range extender hybrid.
Recently, a new heavily camouflaged test mule of the Mahindra XUV 7XO SUV was spotted testing and it’s believed to be the SUV’s upcoming hybrid version. The overall silhouette, upright stance and road presence appear similar to those of the standard ICE-powered XUV 7XO.

Hybrid System & Competition
According to reports, Mahindra XUV 7XO hybrid could be offered with a series-parallel strong hybrid powertrain similar to the system used in the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
Most of its current rivals including the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus and Jeep Meridian don’t offer a strong hybrid powertrain. In terms of pricing, however, it could compete indirectly with the Toyota Innova Hycross.
Is the Mahindra XUV 7XO Hybrid Worth Waiting For?
Buyers who prioritize fuel efficiency and lower running costs without switching to a pure EV can definitely wait for the upcoming Mahindra XUV 7XO hybrid. The hybrid version is expected to be significantly more fuel efficient than the existing petrol and diesel variants.
Similar to the ICE-powered version, the strong hybrid XUV 7XO will be well-equipped with features such as panoramic sunroof, 12.3-inch triple screen, ventilated front and second row seats, multi-zone ambient lighting, 6-way electrically operated co-driver’s seat with powered ‘Boss’ mode, Level 2 ADAS, adaptive cruise control and more.
Mahindra’s Range-Extender – What to Expect?
If reports are to be believed, Mahindra & Mahindra has started testing the hybrid applications for its proven 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre engines on the INGLO platform-based range-extender hybrid SUV. To accommodate hybrid system, the modular INGLO architecture will require significant re-engineering, including modifications to the engine, transmission, additional cooling hardware and exhaust system.
