However, the Maruti Ignis continues to be listed on the official website, and the carmaker has not yet issued any official statement on its discontinuation.

A Look at Its Journey So Far

The Maruti Ignis was first introduced in January 2017 as a premium urban compact vehicle aimed at urban buyers. Over its lifecycle, the model received a total of three updates, including a major facelift in 2020. The Ignis struggled to generate sales due to its polarize styling, confused positioning and the absence of a diesel engine. The rapid growt of the compact crossover segment further impacted its demand.

What Could Replace the Ignis?

According to media reports, Maruti Suzuki is working on an all-new micro-SUV (codenamed Y43), which could be introduced as a replacement of the Ignis. It’s expected to arrive in 2027 as a rival to the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch. Following a multi-powertrain strategy, the carmaker might offer the sub-4 metre SUV with petrol mild hybrid, CNG/CBG and electric powertrain options.

It’s still too early to comment on exact engine details. However, the upcoming Maruti micro-SUV could feature a 1.2L, three-cylinder petrol engine paired with mild-hybrid tech. Maruti Suzuki might also consider using its tried-and-tested 1.0L, three-cylinder turbo petrol for this model.

Speculations further suggest that new Maruti Y43 SUV could benefit from the brand’s all-new in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain, which is expected to debut with the updated Fronx in 2027. If it happens, the micro SUV could become one of the most fuel efficient Maruti Suzuki models in India. It might also emerge as the most affordable SUV in the brand’s product lineup.
